Tournaments

I have decided I want to participate in more tournaments.  I am looking at the IBJJF Houston International tourny in Feb.  I think I can get ready in time for that one.

It has been so hard to get to the gym with my new job taking up all my time.  I have been working a lot of hours.  Usually the problem is that I get done too late to get to the gym in time for class.  I have been able to do the beginners bjj class that Shawn teaches on Tues and Thurs a couple of times.

This past week John wasn't having normal evening class so I went up there in the evening and drilled a couple of times with my buddy David and also did Shawn's class a couple of times.  I think if I can get up there as much as I went last week I will be ok in the tournament.  I don't know if it will be enough to win but I think I can make a good showing.

I also went to the 5:45 am fitness classes 3 times last week.  I am going to try to get up there 4 times in the coming week.  We will see how that works out haha.

Sharice! Me too, hoping to get in at least two this semester. I'm trying to trim down to 135ish to make weigh ins with my gi on. Wish I had those 5:45am classes!

Haha, best of luck :)

what's your weight division? do you ever cut weight for competitions? i've competed twice but haven't cut weight because there are rarely enough girls present to even make separate divisions, and i love food ofcourse lol

Hey Josh!! You should definitely do some tournaments. I think you would do awesome because you have some solid technique.

Shakia - I just saw this comment haha. I wouldn't cut weight for a tournament, generally. The last tournament I did I think I was in a lower weight class than I generally would be in but that was only because I was cutting weight for an MMA fight. I also love me some food.

I have only gone to two tournaments so far. I think when I do future tournaments I will only go to the larger ones because otherwise you run into exactly the problem you mentioned. There are never enough women entered and you end up being mis-matched. Good luck when you compete next. I'm about to check out your blog. :-)

Hey Sharice! Gonna make it for the Houston Open? Would be nice to meet you! I'll be the short redhead working as scorekeeper both days; also competing as a blue belt. Come find me!

Hi Georgette,
A lot has changed over the last month and I will not be going to the Houston Open. I am disappointed I won't get the chance to meet you there, although I am sure we will meet in the future.

p.s. - I really enjoy your blog!!
